Is Micro transaction the answer for developers to survive?
Lets not be hypocrites: Devs need all the money they can earn to both survive and create AAA games for players. Thats how capitalism works. Its a great way to earn money for a game’s lifespan. But is MT the only viable way to survive? Yes and No. Yes, because of this:
The Witcher 3 is proof that devs can create games without MT. Sales figures for this game are astounding. They sold 33 million copies across all platforms (indepth sales figure here). Their DLC is so packed that its like they gave a game almost for free ($20 estimated). It sold so much they did not made a game for almost 4 years now!
In all fairness, The Witcher 3 is a superb game. Packed with content, you can spend 100 hours playing with barely finishing it. NPC’s are intelligent. Monsters are greatly designed. Landscape is so good. Even with bugs this game is great. It was packed to the brim if this is the only game you have, it can last a year before you buy another one.
The point now is this: Great games can survive without MT. It’s not needed and games can sell a lot if it is done right. So how about the answer No? Why can’t devs survive without micro transaction? The answer in my opinion is only the mobile app devs will be affected without microtransactions.
Pay to win games in Android and IOS are necessary because people just want to download free stuff. If you put the word free in a game app, its definitely going to sell. And with ads included, it is profitable for survival.
Its just a matter of which platform MT should be applied. Mobile apps can go for it. But if I am paying almost $60 dollars for a game, it should be MT free and a game worth playing for long!
